Solahart Twilight installation complete
After quite a few setbacks, a group of street children now receive hot water, free from the sun. With three shiny new Solahart solar water heaters, bath time is set to be a lot more pleasant for the kids at Twilight Children this winter.
75 destitute children from the central Johannesburg area call Twilight their home. The home started as a soup kitchen in 1983 and developed into a shelter and skills development centre over the years.
With their existing electric geysers, Twilight Children had a maximum of 450 litres of hot water at any given moment. 450 litres is not nearly enough to ensure that each child has a hot shower every day.
Twilight Children executive director Jane Prichard approached Solahart dealer Adrian Chessman in August last year. The home managed to raise funds for two 300-litre Solahart solar water heaters. Chessman assessed the home's needs and decided that a third geyser would be needed to provide sufficient hot water for all the boys in the home.
Because Twilight couldn't afford a third system, Chessman approached Solahart South Africa's holding company Selected Energy. Jim Hickey, managing director of Selected Energy, agreed to sponsor a third 300-litre Solahart solar geyser at no cost to the home. Chessman also offered to do the installation for free.
With the systems ready for installation, Chessman's team on standby and the home eager to benefit from the electricity savings solar water geysers provide, Chessman was hopeful that the installation would be complete by the end of last year.
Trying to find a crane to get the heavy solar geysers on the roof of a three-storey building proved a challenge. Chessman spent months negotiating with crane companies and even the fire department to find a crane, to no avail.
When it became clear that they weren't going to find a company to sponsor a crane, Chessman decided to carry the three systems up three flights of stairs inside the building and up the fire escape to the roof. With the help of some of the older boys in the home, this is exactly what was done on 23 February.
"I am relieved it's all done at last," said Chessman after the installation.
"More than that I am glad my company and Solahart have been able to
contribute to making life a little better for the kids at Twilight.
Every little bit helps, I believe, and with winter on the way, I know
we wont be the only ones having a hot shower."
the money the shelter will save by disconnecting the four conventional
geysers will continue to provide financial relief for Twilight Children.
Selected Energy managing director Jim Hickey agrees.
am delighted that we were awarded the order for the two Solahart solar
geysers. I'm grateful that we had the opportunity to assist Twilight
Children by donating the third solar water heater," said Hickey.
"It's a great feeling knowing that these children will have an abundance of hot water, especially with winter approaching."
