Did you know?
The Department of Trade and Industry is in the process to implement new building codes. The new codes require that 50% of a new building’s water heating requirements must come from a renewable energy source, such as a heat pump or solar water heater. Solar savings for Bloemfontein school
Selected Energy dealer, Piet van den Berg, installed 26 solar water heaters at the Martie du Plessis school in Bloemfontein. The school was established in 1958 and caters for grade R – grade 12 students with special education needs.
During the first phase of the installation, Piet and his team installed 21 systems at the school’s three boarding houses. The second phase was completed in March 2011, where an additional five systems were installed. The boarding houses accommodate approximately 150 students, and an additional nine flats (adjacent to the boarding houses) accommodate the school’s personnel.
“By replacing all their geysers with solar water heaters, the school experienced a 50% saving on their water heating costs. When the school starts to enjoy a 70% saving [when all the units are in use], the installation will pay itself off in two to three years,” says Piet.
By investing in Solahart solar water heaters, the school is now able to provide its students with hot water, during rain or shine and times of unreliable power supply. The return on investment will also make itself evident over the next two years, and will save the school thousands in the years to come.
