Fit for an architect

With strict architectural guidelines that are enforced at many residential estates, the installation of a solar water heater on a roof might be confronted with a few hurdles along the way.

However, as Solahart dealer Francois du Preez has proven, there is always a solution. Du Preez recently installed a 302J system on architect Etienne Stols’ family home, without compromising the aesthetics of the house.

Rooftop resolution

The house is situated in the upmarket and exclusive Meyersdal Eco Estate, where the architectural guidelines specifically state that geysers are not allowed on pitched roofs. “The installation had to aesthetically fit in with the house. We had to adhere to the guidelines of the estate, and we had to be really careful, as the house was recently painted,” said Francois.

Francois and his team also had to break down a parapet wall, plaster, waterproofed and painted the section where the system was installed in order for it to face north. “There is also a tree nearby that we had to take into account – in the winter the system won’t receive a full day’s sun, but it will be close enough.”

Etienne Stols and his firm, SCS Architects, do a lot of upmarket work in the estate. By going through the installation process with Francois, Etienne will now be able to give tips and advice to his clients regarding the most ideal solar water heating solution.

Family-sized efficiency

Due to the irregularities with Eskom’s electricity supply, Etienne has been monitoring his household’s electricity usage on a daily basis. He switched the electrical geyser off, as well as the back-up element of the Solahart. “At the moment, the Solahart system is working really well for Etienne and his family, especially now during the summer,” said Francois.

Wits commercial installation

During June 2011, the Selected Energy team implemented the first phase of an extensive solar water heating installation at a new student accommodation development at Wits.

At the time of writing, commercial engineer Chris Elliott and his team installed 74 Solahart 302J systems, with 73 systems to be installed in the near future. The total bed count on the site is 1 107.

In preparation to this massive installation, Selected Energy provided a full turnkey solution to Wits. Elliott, who is also the commercial division manager at Selected Energy, calculated the exact amount of systems needed to adhere to the requirements of the development. The Selected Energy team took control of the whole installation, ensuring optimum performance.

Sustainable building news

With the recent amended to the National Building Regulations act, the South African construction industry has changed for the better. According to Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies, the new act might be a catalyst for other alternative energy industries in South Africa, prompting job creation. Meanwhile, the newly appointed chief executive officer of the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA), Brian Wilkinson reasons that “…the ultimate objective is to ensure that the need for, and economic benefits of, sustainable building practice becomes internalised in the minds of property owners, managers and developers such that it influences thinking at the conception of a project and informs, shapes all actions and decisions going forward.”

A R10-million solar thermal flat plate facility was launched in East London on 27 October.  The plant has a yearly production capacity of around 22 000 collectors on a single shift, making South Africa more sustainable with regards to economic development and energy generation.

Introduction to the Solahart range: The Synergy heat pump

The Solahart Synergy is a smart, energy efficient alternative to traditional solar water heaters. Rather than using solar collectors, it uses highly efficient heat pump technology to extract heat from the surrounding air.

Solahart Synergy's advanced design provides single-pass true top down heating. The flow of the water through the heat exchanger is controlled to ensure the water is heated to 60°C in a single pass and deposited at the top of the storage cylinder for immediate use. This ensures the supply of usable hot water without waiting for the entire tank to heat.
