Birchwood hosts successful family day event!
As Southern Africa’s largest independent hotel and conference centre, Birchwood Hotel is not only big in hospitality but big in family events as well! Birchwood’s first annual family fun run attracted over 2 000 people as families flocked to Birchwood on Sunday the 3rd of April to take part in either the 8km; 5km or kiddies 1km race and then stayed on to enjoy a sunny and festive morning in the Birchwood gardens thereafter.
The aesthetics, organisation, safety, catering and over all logistics of this event were unrivaled as everything from registration through to the prize giving ran seamlessly. Support was whole heartedly given by the Metro police who secured the race route and local fire department who lent their siren to give the race an exciting start. Further support was given in the form of sponsors: Tempest Car Hire, Solahart, Waste Plan, ABI, The Ventures Group, Top Shot Tours, Hi-Flyerz and DSTV assisted with prizes, products and helping hands at all the water points.
Having learnt a tremendous amount about arranging such large scale events during the International Football Village held at Birchwood Hotel last year during the soccer world cup, Birchwood’s CEO, Kevin Clarence reports that the fun run provided a medium for reaching a new target market and furthering the property’s service offering. “One only has to visit the Birchwood to fully appreciate the extent of our services and facilities and this fun run was a catalyst to invite members of the public, especially our local community, who ordinarily wouldn’t have come to the property”.
According to the hotel’s Marketing Director, Jazzman Mahlakgane the event was a huge success considering the number of families who turned out for the race and actually participated in the event. It was refreshing to see that there is a huge interest in family activities and we are already working on a monthly family picnic concept which will see families chilling out in a quiet and relaxed atmosphere with great music and fantastic activities for the entire family.
The fun run also served as a dry run for the Birchwood 21km annual half marathon which is now on the official CGA calendar and will take place on the 1st of April 2012. Amongst those who have already registered for next years race should surely be this years winners. Next year’s race isn’t an April fool joke but it is going to be one of the most interesting and exciting Half Marathon race in Gauteng, concludes Mahlakgane’.
The Birchwood Athletic Club would also like to congratulate Raphael Sengodi & Marriam Thole winners of the male and female 8km race respectively as well as Donald Mathipa who won the mens’ 5km and Yolanda Pretorius winning the 5km in the female category. The biggest fun was when all the children finished their 1km within 5min. They all received party packs at then end of their gruelling race which was run on the hotel premises for safety.
Going into 10 years of hosting successful monthly jazz evenings, to last years International Football Village and now hosting the hugely successful family fun run and how it was put together, it proves conclusively that there really is no event that the Birchwood Hotel cannot handle successfully.
