Selected Energy is the company that brings you Solahart solar water heaters. Concern for the environment prompted founder Jim Hickey to find an environmentally friendly alternative to electricity 30 years ago.

Hickey searched the world for the most suitable solution based on Southern African needs. He found the answer in Australia and secured the sole rights to distribute Solahart in Southern Africa.

Today Selected Energy manages and supplies over fifty Solahart dealers across South Africa. In recent years Selected Energy's product offering expanded with the addition of commercial water heating solutions. Selected Energy's commercial solutions are ideal for the hotel industry, factories and the mining sector.

With over 20 000 systems installed nationally, Selected Energy is committed to becoming the leading supplier of renewable energy solutions in South Africa.

If added together, Selected Energy’s CO2 emissions saving is equal to 3.7 tonnes of greenhouse gas every year. That is the equivalent of taking a small car off the road every year. Put another way, if the geysers that Selected Energy replaced had to work for only six hours more than a Solahart every day, it would use almost 100GWh in electricity every year. It would take a large wind turbine working 24hrs a day at full capacity two years to generate the same amount of power.

Today, Solahart continues its quest to make renewable energy usage more widely accessible to the consumer by producing innovative products.

The history of Solahart products

Over 100 years of pride

Solahart has grown to be the leading international supplier of solar water heaters from its humble beginnings as a small plumbing and metalworking business in Perth, Western Australia.

Originally established in 1901, SW Hart & Co, Plumbers and Ironworks was formed by two enterprising plumbers to manufacture tanks, troughs and sinks for the pioneering community of Perth.

Following half a century of successful growth it was incorporated in 1953. It was at this time that SW Hart & Co made a long term commitment to supplying solar water heaters which were ideally suited to the Western Australian climate. So the Solahart brand was born.

The initial Solahart solar water geysers were ungainly by today's streamlined standards, but they proved to be very effective. By the mid 1960s Solahart had achieved national recognition as the leading manufacturer of solar water heaters.

Benoni resident invests in third Solahart

Solahart customer sees return on investment

"I built my house in 1976. The total cost of my solar water heater amounted to 1.25% of the value of the house. I paid R198.28 for the geyser and R394.93 for the panels. I used to pay 1.6 cents per unit for electricity. If my solar water heater saved me one third of my monthly electricity usage, my initial investment of R593.21 has yielded a return of R52 579.81."
